Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how you got to where you are today?
Hi, I’m Sarah! I’m 29, living on Vancouver Island. I’m a Youtuber and content creator. I’ve been making YouTube videos since I graduated high school and continued to make them as I went through university (where I studied Geomatics). Ever since I was young, I had always been drawn to magazine editorials and styling and that turned into a love for Tumblr and Lookbook.nu (does anyone remember?). I’d always been interested in creating especially surrounding fashion and decided to start posting my outfits online. It wasn’t until about 3 or 4 years ago that I really started sharing my home decor and design ideas, though my space has always been an integral part of my creative life.
While I was on my post-university job hunt, covid hit and I was given an opportunity to try doing YouTube full time. I feel so lucky and privileged that it has had me engaged since then and I’ve been doing it for 4 years full time now. The social media landscape has changed so much during this time but I’m grateful to have an amazing community that shares my interest in design, fashion, music etc. and that I get to continue to share what I love.
How would you describe your home?
I still very much feel like my home is a work in progress. I just moved into this new space about a year ago and knowing myself, it will be a few years before I will feel like it will be a true reflection of me and partner wholly. I would say though that it’s very eclectic, warm, and thoughtful. It’s my sanctuary filled with everything I’ve collected from the world outside to be reflected back at me.
If you could peek inside any person’s house to see how it’s decorated, who would that be and why?
This is a tough one because there are so many and I am so nosy! I’m definitely intrigued by musician’s and writer’s spaces. My boyfriend is a musician and he’s collected so many pieces of gear over the years and they add to our space in such an interesting and architectural way even though they’re not traditionally meant to be decor. So maybe I’d love to see Andrew Bird, André 3000, Thom Yorke, Kate Bush or Julia Jacklin’s home. I just can’t narrow it down, sorry!
Can you tell us about some of your favorite pieces in your home?
Yes! A couple years ago I found this beautiful tapestry at a secondhand store that I recently got framed. I still haven’t been able to pinpoint its origins but I love the colours and how it’s become perfectly unraveled. Next to it, is another one of my favourite pieces which is an original piece called ‘The Dancers’ by one of my favourite artists, Laura Benson. My best friend gifted this to me for my birthday last year and I will cherish it forever.
Then, I couldn’t go without mentioning my two 1910/20s antique teak cabinets. I’ve had both of these for many years now and I love them so much. If I had a bigger space I would certainly have more. They’re so beautiful and add such lovely warmth and character to our home. Most of my favourite pieces are secondhand or antique. I really love having pieces in my home that could potentially haunt me.
Do you have any projects you're working on right now that you're excited about?
I’m really excited about my home series that I’ve been working on! I’ve been sharing my thought/design process as I’ve been decorating my home. My Tulip light was a big part of my hallway transformation. I’ve been documenting everything and sharing it over on my socials and it’s been such a fun process to create in this way.
