Spotlight: Andrew Matarazzo
Andrew Matarazzo and his Gem Natural
Who are you and what do you do with your days?
My name is Andrew Matarazzo. I am an actor, author and I have my own interior decor showroom in Los Angeles.
How would you describe your interior style?
I love wabi sabi and minimalism. Lots of organic and warm materials like stone, linen, plaster, aged wood. And I like to keep things pretty monochromatic and non stimulating.
What are your favorite things in your home?
It's very peaceful. I use a lot of neutral tones so it's easy on the eyes. And I love the old stone pieces I mix in with the more modern furniture.
What is the first thing you notice about a space?
How busy it is. If theres a lot of things going on at the same time, wether that be with the interior design choices or just the space in general, I tend to enjoy it less. When a place has good flow and cohesion and there's aesthetically pleasing points of interest, I love spending time there. I pay attention a lot to the ambiance.
How do you make your friends and family feel at home when they come over?
I have to say, my place is not designed to be very guest friendly! I really designed my space to be my own personal safe haven within the chaos of my industry and LA in general. Of course, I always try to be a warm host, but if I have someone over, its always for something lowkey like a watching a movie or to sit and talk in the living room. Its a calm space.
If you could peek inside any person's house to see how it's decorated, who would that be and why?
Luckily, I feel like we have a lot of access now to seeing inside the homes of great artists and notable names. I think I'd honestly want to revisit some ancient structures at their height - Egypt, Greece, the Gardens of Babylon. Places that once were otherworldly. I'd love to see what they were like at their prime.
Do you have any projects you're working on right now that you're excited about?
I published my first fiction novel BEDLAM last year, and the follow up title, SWEVEN, came out in June!
