How do I install a Tulip Shade?

Installation is effortless. It takes just a few minutes and requires no rewiring.

How do I remove wrinkles from my Tulip Shade?

A quick steam is all it takes. Any creases from shipping will gently release with light steaming—revealing the full beauty of the craftsmanship.

Are Tulip Shades suitable for both renters and homeowners?

Absolutely. Our Shades are designed for anyone looking to transform their space effortlessly—whether you rent, own, or are somewhere in between. With no tools or rewiring required, a Tulip Shade offers a simple yet high-design lighting solution that adapts to your home, however permanent (or temporary) it may be.

And if you ever move, they're just as easy to uninstall and take with you, so your lighting can evolve with your space.

What types of ceiling lights can Tulip Shades cover?

Crafted for versatility, our Shades are designed to soften harsh lighting while maintaining the integrity of your space’s original fixtures.

A Tulip Shade can be installed over any light 15” or less in diameter - including recessed cans, bare bulbs, traditional flush mounts, and, of course, boob lights.

If your space lacks overhead lighting, you can place a remote-controlled puck light underneath a Tulip Shade for an instant glow.

Should I use the provided no-mess drywall screws or renter-friendly removable tape?

Our renter-friendly removable tape is perfect for short term rentals, but if you are staying in your apartment for several years, our suggestion is to use the 3 drywall screws for extra security.

If you live in a particularly humid location, we'd recommend using drywall screws as well.

Always use rubbing alcohol to clean the Ceiling Mount and ceiling surface where the Ceiling Mount will attach prior to installation.

Are Tulips safe for nurseries and children's rooms?

Yes! Designed with both artistry and safety in mind, Tulip Shades provide gentle, diffused lighting that’s ideal for creating a calm, inspiring space. No fragile glass, no harsh glares—just soft light for your little one's world.

Similar to any other light fixture, it's important to ensure that the bare bulb does not come into direct contact with your Tulip Shade.

Ceiling Types

Can I install a Tulip on textured or popcorn ceilings?

Yes! Even on challenging surfaces, Tulip Shades are designed to adapt. Every Tulip Shade comes with perfect no-mess drywall screws to use for easy install and easy removal. After removal, you just need a little spackle to fill in the 3 small holes.

Can I install a Tulip Shade on a metal or steel ceiling?

Yes! If you have a vintage metal or steel ceiling, Command Strips may not adhere well, but there's a simple workaround. Place Neodymium Disc Magnets (3/4" D × 1/8" H work great) on either side of the plastic ceiling mount ring. The magnets hold the ring securely in place, no drilling required. This tip comes straight from one of our customers who swears they "worked like an absolute charm."

Will a Tulip Shade work on a drop tile ceiling?

No, we don't recommend it. Drop ceiling tiles aren't designed for adhesive mounting, and our Ceiling Mount requires drywall screws that would leave visible holes, likely requiring full tile replacement after removal.

Will a Tulip Shade work with ceiling fans?

We're aware of the need for a ceiling fan-compatible solution and are actively exploring designs that maintain our high standards of craftsmanship and adaptability. Stay tuned.

Will a Tulip Shade work on a slanted ceiling?

Our Shades are designed to hang flat from level ceilings. We don’t recommend installing our Shades on a slanted ceiling because it likely won’t hang properly or stay secure.

Light Bulb Recommendations

What light bulbs should I use?

We recommend changing out incandescent bulbs to LED bulbs.

We specifically love the warm, inviting glow of 2700K LED bulbs because they create the perfect ambiance while being energy-efficient and produce minimal heat. Here's a link to our favorite.

While there’s no strict wattage limit, we recommend choosing an LED bulb with a brightness level that suits your space. Most importantly, ensure the bare bulb does not come into direct contact with your Tulip Shade for both safety and longevity.

Can I use Tulip Shades on "naked" light bulbs without the “boob” glass?

Yes, but ensure the bare bulb does not come into direct contact with your Tulip Shade for both safety and longevity.

Removal

I'm moving! How do I take down my Tulip Shade?

Tulip Shades are designed to install again and again, that means you can easily redecorate or take your Tulip with you to your next place.

However, removing your Ceiling Mount gently from your ceiling is key! Do not pull your Ceiling Mount straight down. Grab one side of the Ceiling Mount and peel it from your ceiling allowing the renter-friendly removable tape strips adhered to the Ceiling Mount to release one by one.

Carefully remove the 6 remaining renter-friendly removable tape strips by slowly pulling the tabs along the ceiling to release.

Can I order more renter-friendly removable tape or no-mess drywall screws?

Our Tulip Installation Kit includes everything you need to re-install your Tulip Shade.

Shipping & Returns

How long will it take to receive my order?

We aim to ship all orders within 3-5 business days of purchase. Please note that during busier times, orders may take slightly longer to dispatch, and we appreciate your patience.

For any pre-order item, your entire order will ship out when the pre-order item is back in stock as indicated on the product page.

Do you offer returns or exchanges?

We accept returns within 30 days of receiving your order. All returned products must be in their original packaging and in original condition.

If you added Checkout+ to your order, your return or exchange shipping is already covered — just start the process through our returns portal and a prepaid label will be provided. If you didn't add Checkout+, return shipping costs will be the customer's responsibility.

Please note, all discounted Shades are final sale. If the return is the result of an error on our part, please reach out immediately so we can make things right.

What is Checkout+?

Checkout+ is an optional return and exchange coverage option available at checkout. For a small fee added to your order, Checkout+ covers the cost of return and exchange shipping, so you won't need to pay for a return label out of pocket. If you choose Checkout+, a small coverage fee is added to your order. If you ever need to return or exchange an item, simply start a return through our returns portal and your prepaid shipping label will be provided at no additional cost.

What if I didn't add Checkout+ to my order?

If you didn't opt into Checkout+ at the time of purchase, standard return shipping fees may apply. Coverage can only be added at checkout, it can't be added after your order is placed.

What if my package is lost, damaged, or stolen in transit?

If you added Checkout+ to your order, you can file a claim through our returns portal. If you didn't add Checkout+, please email us at info@hellotulip.com. Many "lost" packages do eventually arrive.

Do you ship internationally?

We currently ship to the USA, Canada, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Czechia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and UK.

For international orders, tariffs and duties are calculated and included at checkout along with your shipping charge, so there shouldn't be any surprises upon delivery.

What's your final sale policy?

Final sale Shades will be indicated by text on the product page and within your cart prior to check out and are not eligible for returns.

Material & Cleaning

What are Tulip Shades made of?

Tulip Shades are crafted from 100% cotton. Since our Shades are not mass-produced, colors may vary slightly between production runs, reflecting the unique craftsmanship of each piece.

How do I clean my Tulip Shade?

To keep your Shade looking its best, simply pop your Shade off its Ceiling Mount and gently wipe with a clean cloth that's been very slightly dampened with water. For stains, spot clean with a mild cleaning solution.

Yes! We offer a trade discount to interior designers, stylists, set-designers, and anyone else in the home and interiors industry. To qualify, you’ll need to provide company information verifying your design credentials.
